"Wait, why are you moving to New Zealand again?"
Lots of people have asked, "So, are you moving there for work?" or "Is your fiancΓ© from New Zealand?" The response has always been a sheepish, "Um... no. We're kinda of just doing it because we can?"
Since we met, Will had talked about wanting to "live somewhere cool" before we inevitably settled down close to family in the great midwest, a truly lovely place we both call home but is sadly lacking in dramatic views.
After a particularly difficult day at work, I (Laura) finally threw up my hands and agreed to as least think about leaving Madison. Will gleefully, yet tentatively, encouraged me to start thinking about different options. I (being a rather, er, over-zealous researcher and planner) sprung into action, and we decided to look into applying for a Working Holiday Visa for New Zealand.
The decision to go to New Zealand became official the same night that Will asked me another very important Make-it-Official question: "Will you marry me?" Since then we have been planning away and making preparations for their year abroad.
We will be traveling New Zealand, basking in our "fun-employment" for about three months. After that we will need to hunker down and find work, as we'll likely be getting quite poor. The hope is we will be able to then travel Australia and Asia for the last few months. This adventure will test us in many ways, and leaving the people we love behind was very difficult, but we are excited for the adventure of a lifetime!
Follow our adventures (and likely misadventures) at your leisure here on this blog! We will try our very best to keep things up-to-date so that family and friends (read: our mothers) don't panic and think were dead. Happy trails!
